It is impossible to describe all the cultural, historical and artistic splendours on Capri which is undoubtedly one of the most famous islands in the world.
The island abounds in the remains of antique splendour and countless natural wonders such as grottoes where the sea appears to be magically illuminated from beneath the waters, terraced vineyards finishing in sheer drops down to the sea, steps carved into the precipitous hillside by the Greeks.
Capri Histori
After the colonialisation by the Phoenicians and later by the Greeks, the first great lovers of Capri were the Romans, who in 29 A.D. bartered the island in exchange for the island of Ischia. It became the imperial residence of Roman emperors such as Augustus and Nero the remains of whose villas can still be seen.
The town of Capri was founded on a hill around 1000 A.D. around the present day piazzetta to escape the ravages of corsairs; it later fell under the control of Amalfi. In the modern period, it has followed the history of the Reign of the Two Sicilies.
